The History of Shopping Center Development
Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Economics / Business, printed single-sided, grade: 2,0, Nürtingen University, course: Oberseminar, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Shopping centers continue to be a very successful land use, real estate and retail concept, but there has been a significant change since the development of the first shopping centers in the USA. Today, shopping centers are not only shopping destinations anymore. A modern shopping center offers a wide range of possibilities. Shopping, dining, entertainment, sports and recreation is consolidated and so it becomes more and more an amusement function. The purpose of this paper is to show the history of shopping center development. But it won t be focused on the history only. As shopping center activity continues worldwide, also the current situation, new trends and future developments will be illustrated as well as an insight into the new shopping center market of Asia, which is one of the most growing markets at the moment, will be given.

Shopping Leakage: Case Study of Maseru
This book is an attempt to understand shopping leakage from Maseru to Bloemfontein and Ladybrand. The reason and what motivate people to travel a long distance in search for a particular type of goods or services. It investigates the patterns of shopping leakage and factors that contribute to the leakage. It tend to highlights the roles of town planners and development planning in spatial retail places and commercial land uses. Theories were understood to prove the on going shopping leakage from Maseru. Shopping leakage was traced to certain aspects of consumer behaviour, the characteristics of the shopping trip, retail facilities and types of shops available. Socio-economic factors also influence shopping pattern, as do entertainment activities. Government and corporate bodies such as banks, through their regulations and laws created an impact on the shopping leakage from Maseru to Ladybrand and Bloemfontein. It is also assumed that topography and burning of retail buildings in Maseru in September 1998 also limits the retail facilities in the town. Recommendation was provided at the end of the book on how to minimize shopping leakage.
